The Why Behind Origin Colombia

Origin Colombia began with a simple belief: extraordinary craftsmanship deserves to be valued, and the women who create it deserve to be seen.

More than fifteen years ago, I met a Wayuu artisan at a cultural event in Colombia. I was immediately captivated by the color and beauty of her bags, but what stayed with me was what each piece represented — hours of skilled handwork, individual creativity, and a weaving tradition passed through generations of Wayuu women.

That encounter stayed with me for years and eventually became the inspiration for Origin Colombia.

Today, we work directly with a small community of Wayuu women in Colombia to create the bags you find at Origin Colombia. We develop our designs together, bringing ideas for color, pattern, and contemporary style into a collaborative process that respects the artisans’ extraordinary weaving skills, creative freedom, and generations of knowledge.

Each bag is individually handmade. No factory. No assembly line. No mass production. The hands of the woman who creates it are part of what makes every piece different.

And importantly, the artisans determine the value of their own work. Our role is to build a bridge between their craftsmanship and women around the world who appreciate originality, exceptional handwork, and the human story behind what they wear.

For us, this is what it means to value Colombian craftsmanship: recognizing handmade work for what it truly is — skilled work with cultural, creative, and human value.

More Than Wayuu Bags

Our story began with the Wayuu community, but our vision extends beyond it.

Colombia is home to extraordinary artisan traditions, materials, and techniques. As Origin Colombia grows, we are beginning to collaborate with other Colombian artisans and introduce new forms of craftsmanship — while remaining true to the principles on which we began.

About Claudia

I’m Claudia, the Colombian founder of Origin Colombia.

Having lived in different parts of the world, including Asia and now Canada, I have experienced what it means to carry Colombia with me wherever I go. Origin Colombia became a way to share a part of my country with others — not through souvenirs or mass-produced interpretations of Colombian culture, but through the work of the people who create it.

What began with one encounter more than fifteen years ago has grown into a close collaboration with a small community of Wayuu women and a larger vision for Colombian craftsmanship.

My hope is that when you choose a piece from Origin Colombia, you see more than a beautiful bag. You see the creativity behind it, appreciate the time and skill required to make it, and feel a connection to the woman and the country behind its creation.
